PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF HOME FOR THE AGED BLIND AT SECTOR-XI, DWARKA,NEW DELHI

National Association for the Blind-Delhi is a voluntary organization working for the welfare of the Blind in and around Delhi. It was established in 1979 and is working in its present premises since 1986. The Association has undertaken multi-farious activities for the welfare of the blind like education of the Blind children, Hostel for the Blind Children, a state of art Computer Centre for giving computer training to blind persons, Talking Book Library etc. The Association has also undertaken various measures for the cause and care of the elderly blind persons including holding of Eye Camps for Cataract Surgeries, payment of pension to elderly blind persons and above all a Home for the Elderly Blind where they can spend the evening of their life peacefully.

Early in 1993 it was observed that there were many elderly blind persons who were totally neglected by the members of the family. NAB-Delhi established a Home for the Aged Blind in 1993 in Ladpur Village of Nangloi Block in rented building. Subsequently on a land donated by a philanthropist of Narela, a small building comprising of four rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom was constructed on this land on Narela-Bawana road and the inmates were shifted to our own building in Narela in 1996. The Home is functional in this premises since then. All the services in the home including boarding & lodging, clothing, medical facilities etc. are free of any charge.

The total capacity of this premises is limited to ten occupants only. The present location is likely to be acquired for local area development planned by Government. We therefore, applied for land to DDA for construction of a permanent Home for the Elderly Blind and they have allotted 2000 sq. metre of land in favour of NAB for construction of a Home for the Aged Blind in Sector-11 of Dwarka and handed over its physical possession to  NAB-Delhi on 22-1-04.

The Association now proposes to construct a four storeyed building on the plot to provide accommodation to at least 75 elderly blind men with four persons living in each room. There will be a Kitchen, a Pantry, a Dining Hall, a Drawing Room and a Recreation Room along with rooms for workshop. Similarly identical wing for 75 elderly blind women will also be constructed. It is also proposed to set-up a Cyber Café and other necessary facilities.

The estimated expenditure on the construction of the building along with Basement etc. is Rs.3.00 Crores. The estimated expenditure on equipment for the Home i.e. Kitchen, Bed Rooms. Furniture and other accessories will be about Rs.25 lakhs. The total estimated cost is thus Rs.3.25 Crores.
